BHP and Rio Tinto are testing Caterpillar battery-electric haul trucks at the Jimblebar iron ore mine. The trial aims to reduce diesel usage, which accounts for 40-50% of Scope 1 emissions in open-pit mining. The trucks feature a 240-tonne payload capacity and regenerative braking.
